This afternoon, a celebration marked the start of the Grand East Village, a new affordable housing project in Orange County for seniors.
The $30 million project will build 92 low-income apartments for seniors, meeting a growing need in the area for cheap housing.
Experts say that adults are more likely to be homeless because many of them live on fixed incomes.
Commissioner Bakari F. Burns, who represents District 6 of the City of Orlando, said, “It is sad that many of our seniors will have to go back to work to pay their rent and will be homeless.”
“Here in Central Florida, there was a 24% increase in the number of seniors facing homelessness.”
There will be an exercise center, a pickleball court, and a community garden in the Grand East Village.
As little as $597 a month will cover rent for the first two units, giving seniors in the area a much-needed affordable housing choice.
