‘National Award Given to Local School Resource Officer for Saving 17-Year-Old’s Life’

A School Resource Officer from the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office was praised across the country for saving the life of a student. The high school kid had a deep cut, and Deputy John Jones could have cut them off and killed them right away.

A national group for school resource officers named Jones SRO of the month on Tuesday. Jones said he didn’t know about it until he saw it on social media. Jones said he will never forget the time when his training to save lives came into play.

Jones went to help right away when he saw blood outside of Spencer’s Roger Middle School two months ago.

Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer Deputy John Jones said, “I knew I had to do something because if I didn’t, he wouldn’t be with us today.”

When a 17-year-old punched through a double-paned bus window outside of school, he cut his arm. Jones said, “I knew I had to calm him down because he was so riled up and angry.” Jones then put a tourniquet on the arm of the teen to stop the blood. Jones said, “You can die in three minutes.”

Jones always had a bandage on him, and he and some quick thinking saved the teenager’s life. Jones said, “He said it did cut an artery.” Jones said that two weeks after the event, he saw the student.

As Jones put it, “he was very thankful I was there and knew he did something wrong by breaking two windows.”

Jones says that the student’s mother also thanked the SRO for what they did. Jones didn’t know who put him forward for the national SRO of the Month award.

“That’s nice of you,” Jones replied. “It’s an honor to be recognized.” Jones, however, said that he doesn’t do the job to get praise or awards. Jones said, “I do my job every day because I like being at the schools.” “It’s my job to make a difference.”

The SRO of the Month award put Jones in the running for SRO of the year across the country. Deputy Jones said the kid was getting better at home and will be doing schoolwork online until he is fully better.
