The city commissioners are deciding on whether to approve the plan to turn an Orlando hotel into affordable housing.
Commissioners are likely to approve the project at a meeting on Monday. The plan is to turn the Best Western hotel at 2014 W. Colonial Drive into 110 units of low-income, affordable housing “in a location where such housing is sorely needed.”
Shan Rose, who is in charge of Orlando’s District 5, said that the project will help with the housing problem that is still going on.
Rosa Rose said, “This could be a chance for people who are working and making money but can not find a place to live to have a place to stay.”
The units, which are between 300 and 350 square feet, would be turned into studio flats.
A vote is being held on the planned project just a few months after the Palm Gardens Orlando Apartments opened where the Ambassador Hotel used to be.
Rose said, “I heard that things are going well, and I am looking forward to this possibly becoming a moving thing where we take run-down motels and turn them into nice places for people to live.”
Eddie Tosado runs a business next to the Best Western hotel and said that the plan to turn it into flats could be good.
Tosado said, “I believe this might be a good thing for the area.” “The city is getting more and more involved in these projects, especially in this area.”
The flats should be ready by the end of 2025 if everything goes as planned.
