People in one Sunnyvale neighborhood said they are sick of thieves taking their mail and gifts, and some are now taking action to find the thieves.
Someone opened several mailboxes with a key on Friday morning, and then other people took what was inside, as seen on security camera video.
“A lot of mail and packages from everyone in our community along this row were stolen,” said one resident, Jay.
To keep things safe, NBC Bay Area is calling the homeowner “Jay.”
Jay said that something similar happened on Thursday.
But this is not the first time that these mailboxes have been hacked. In February 2023, Jay said that someone stole his W-2s.
He and some of his friends were worried about identity theft and wanted to know why the U.S. Postal Service had not changed the lock on the mailbox after the first break-in.
“We look at a number of security options, but we also have to think about how they will work,” said postal inspector Jeff Fitch.
Jay said he got angry and put a GPS tracker in a fake package. He said the tracker was found in a home in San Jose. He has since turned in a police report to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.
Jay also said that he found a master key that he thought the thieves might have used. However, he is concerned that they may have made more than one copy.
The Postal Service said it is looking into the thefts and wants people to report them as soon as they happen.
