People who live in California’s Alameda County will get a nice Thanksgiving treat in 2024. There will be a big party in the United States one day before Costco opens its new building in Pleasanton.

There are already 15 Cosco stores in the San Francisco Bay Area, and this one in Pleasanton will be the sixteenth. It will open in less than two weeks.

It is finally going to open! Pleasanton’s first Costco has been in the works for a long time, but there have been problems with planning, lawsuits, and construction.

Based on the Costco website, the new warehouse will open to the public on November 27, just one day before Thanksgiving, which is one of the busiest shopping days of the year. It will also have a gas station.

“We are thrilled that the long-awaited opening of Costco is finally coming up,” said James Cooper, president and CEO of the Pleasanton Chamber of Commerce, in a Monday statement to the Weekly.

At 7:30 a.m. on the first day of business, the chamber will cut the ribbon at the new Costco, which is located off of I-680 between Stoneridge Drive and the I-580 interchange.

Along with the ones in Livermore and Danville, this will be the third Costco in the Tri-Valley.

Costco’s repercussions on the local area

Cooper said that the new Costco will be very good for Pleasanton, especially in terms of money. “The city’s annual sales tax revenue will go up right away now that Costco is here,” he said.

Cooper said that this boost is especially helpful because the City Council has been talking a lot lately about Pleasanton’s expected budget deficit, which is partly because sales tax income has been low over the past few years.

His words were, “The city’s yearly sales tax income will go up right away now that Costco is here.”

She told the Weekly on Tuesday, “The opening of Pleasanton’s Costco brings in a new stream of sales tax revenue, which comes at a crucial time as the City deals with a structural deficit.” Susan Hsieh is the city’s finance director.

Cooper also said that the new Costco will help small companies in Pleasanton and nearby areas because business members can shop during special hours that make it easier for them to quickly get what they need.

Cooper said that many of our small businesses, both for-profit and non-profit, count on Costco as a wholesaler because it lets them buy things in large quantities for their operations. There are even chances for small businesses to work with vendors that can help them grow.

Pleasanton’s new Costco

This new Costco, which will be at 7200 Johnson Drive, is part of the Johnson Drive Economic Development Zone project as a whole.

The goal of this project was to make a business hub out of about 40 acres along Johnson Drive, close to Stoneridge Drive and I-680. Along with Costco, the building has two new hotels that opened at the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024.

It will take up about 160,000 square feet for the new Costco building. There will be 768 parking spots and 15 gas pumps that work on both sides at its gas station.

The Adelantado tried to get more information from Costco about the opening but had not heard back by the time of publishing.

As part of the JDEDZ project, some street improvements had to be made. For example, the on-ramp to I-680 northbound on Stoneridge Drive had to be widened to add a second lane.

Johnson Drive had to be widened to add a second northbound lane, and the traffic lights on Owens and Commerce drives had to be made better.

“We are excited to welcome a business that the community has long been behind and looked forward to,” said Gerry Beaudin, the manager of Pleasanton City and County to the Weekly.

“Not only will the new Costco bring in more sales tax money, but it has also led to important road improvements in the area, which will come in handy with all the extra traffic that will come with it.”

The first day of the new Costco is likely to be very busy, but you can always sign up for a membership online and try to get in on the first day. It will be a great place to shop for Christmas either way!
