Texarkana College Receives $5,340 Gift from Texarkana Noon Lions Club

 The Texarkana Noon Lions Club presented a $5,340 check to the Texarkana College Foundation today at a check presentation ceremony held at 2:30 PM in the lobby of the Texarkana College Nelson Administration Building. The gift represents proceeds from a recent gun raffle by the Lions Club and will be used for student scholarships. Lions Club President, Doug Barnette, said, “We love raising money for Texarkana College students. In our mind, there is no more worthy recipient.”

Katie Andrus, director of the TC Foundation, said the gift will have a big impact on students.  “We are so appreciative of the Lion’s Club generous donation and their commitment to higher education,” said Andrus. Continue Reading →

Four Trustees Sworn In for Continued Terms on Texarkana College Board

(left to right): George Moore, Place 7; Ernie Cochran, Place 4; Anne Farris, Place 3; and Derrick McGary, Place 1.  Texarkana, TX- At Texarkana College’s Board of Trustees meeting today, four Trustees were sworn in to office to serve another term. Derrick McGary, Place 1; Anne Farris, Place 3; Ernie Cochran, Place 4; and George Moore, Place 7, all ran unopposed in the election held in November 2018.

Texarkana College Opens New Workforce Training Center in Honor of Ledwell Family

November 28, 2018, Texarkana, TX- Texarkana College opened its new Workforce Training Center today and dedicated the building in memory of Betty and Buddy Ledwell. The Ledwell family has been a vital part of economic development in this region since establishing their business in 1946. Today, Ledwell serves as one of the area’s largest employers, with Steve Ledwell serving as CEO of the company. Ledwell manufactures custom-made trailers, trucks, bodies and parts for the transportation industry, and the company has diversified through the years into meeting the needs of other industrial clients.  TC president James Henry Russell said the Ledwell name in the community is synonymous with excellence, honor and superior work ethic. “The programs housed in the new Betty and Buddy Ledwell Workforce Training Center prepare students to enter the workplace with skills in industrial maintenance, construction technology, and other in-demand occupations,” said Russell. Texarkana College Trustees Vote to Hire Dr. Jason Smith as Ninth President

Trustees also took action to authorize board president Kyle Davis and TC legal counsel John Mercy to finalize the exit agreement for current president James Henry Russell. Russell will officially vacate the president’s position on December 31, 2018, and begin work in the private sector for BWI Companies, Inc., in January. Russell has served as president of TC since 2011. Davis said trustees anticipate a smooth transition in leadership beginning January 1, 2019. “Dr. Smith is already a champion for TC,” said Davis. Community-wide Day of the Dead Event Set for Friday, November 2 at Texarkana College

October 29, 2018, Texarkana, TX- Halloween is prime time for ghosts, ghouls, zombies, and all the creepiness associated with death. In contrast, however, the Mexican holiday, Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), is a sacred day honoring and remembering loved ones who have died. On Friday, November 2, Texarkana College’s Education Opportunity Center (EOC) will host a free, family- friendly Day of the Dead festival, from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm at the Truman Arnold Student Center, 2500 N. Robison Road, Texarkana, TX. The event will include costume and karaoke contests, kids’ booths, face painting, folkloric dancers, and altar contests. Texarkana College Distinguished Lecture Series Presents: Ambition and the Alcotts by Featured Lecturer Lauren Hehmeyer

 Texarkana, TX- After more than 150 years, Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women still appeals to readers of all ages. First published in the late 1860s, this tale of the coming of age of four sisters in the aftermath of the Civil War remains one of the most famous books in the world. As part of Texarkana College’s Distinguished Lecture Series, Lauren Hehmeyer, professor of English and history at TC, will tell the behind the scenes story of Little Women’s author and her sister, May Alcott Nieriker, a successful artist and a genius in her own right, at a public lecture on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at 6:30 PM in Texarkana College’s Palmer Memorial Library. A pre-lecture reception will begin at 6:00 PM.  The event is free and open to the public. Featured lecturer Hehmeyer is a popular public speaker who was invited to present her paper, “Let The World Know You Are Alive: The Concept of Genius and May Alcott Nieriker,” at the one-day conference Recovering May Alcott Nieriker held this past summer at the Universite de Paris–Diderot. Texarkana College to Host Mexican Consulate of Dallas on Campus

 This week, Texarkana College will welcome to campus the Mexican Consulate, the official branch of the Mexican government that operates in the United States. Their focus while visiting Northeast Texas is to help Mexican citizens living or traveling in the U.S. The Consulate issues identification cards, passports and Mexican voter registration cards, officially stamps and notarizes legal documents to be used in Mexico, and assists with double nationality, among many other services. The Consulate will be on TC campus October 23-28 and will be set up in the Pinkerton Fitness Center in the gym area located at 2500 N. Robison Road, Texarkana, TX.  Appointments are required and can be made by calling 1-877-639-4835, online at mexitel.sre.gob.mx, or through the free iPhone and Android app, MiConsulMex. Texarkana College Student Organization Promotes Cultural Knowledge, Appreciation

September 17, 2018, Texarkana, TX- Texarkana College is a great place for high school students and adults who are looking to begin a new career path. It’s also an affordable opportunity for students around the world who are trying to get an education in the United States. According to data from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), more than 1.18 million international students choose to study in America, and one of the top destinations is Texas. Dr. Theresa McDonald teaches Computer Technology at Texarkana College and she said in the 32 years working on campus, she has seen an increase in students from other countries.
