Equality Texarkana Plans Silent Gathering Today to Support Transgender Troops

July 29, 2017 -Equality Texarkana is encouraging everyone to come out this evening for a silent gathering.  The gathering will meet at the war memorial on the corner of 7th and Stateline at 7:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. for 30 minutes of silence.  The event is planned for thirty minutes to allow people to come and go if they need to, or for people who may be unable to arrive at 7:00 p.m.  The event is open to anyone in the community and everyone is encouraged to come by even if only for a few minutes. The silent gathering is planned to show support for transgender people and their families currently serving in the United States military.  According to an independent study funded by the Department of Defense, the Rand Corporation gave conservative estimates of between 1,320 to 6,630 transgender people currently serve in active duty capacities for the United States Military.  The same study estimated that 830 to 4,160 serve in reserves.  These people have been serving our country, many for years, prior to President Trump’s recent statement that transgender people would not be allowed in the military. A recent UCLA study has indicated that nearly 150,000 transgender people have served in some capacity of the military in the past.  Consideration must also be given that the Department of Defense does not provide medical coverage for elective surgeries, cosmetic surgery, or other related types of surgeries not consider a “need”.
