So-So’ Impression Left by Somi Somi’s Soft Serve

For a new snack place to try, a friend told me to check out Somi-Somi, a soft serve shop. It was just opened on August 23, 2024, in Milpitas, so I chose to go check it out on a Thursday afternoon, right after school.

The shop felt very big and empty when I walked in. The store was empty because I was the only customer there, and the simple design made it feel even more so. Also, there was no furniture. I liked how bright and white the lights were. But the store was pretty scary because there weren’t many people there and it wasn’t decorated.

It wasn’t easy to choose from the choices. It turned out to only have six tastes, not nine like I thought. All three of the final flavors are just mixes of the first six. They could have added more tastes, because people who buy from them often might get tired of the same ones and want to try something new.

You can get the soft serve with an ah-boong, which is a waffle fish filled with any flavor you want. You could pick from about six different options. Black sesame, Nutella, red bean, matcha custard, and normal custard are all in the filling. If you didn’t wish to A friend suggested this place when I was looking for new places to eat snacks.

You could get your ice cream in a standard cup if you didn’t want the ah-boong. Personally, I believe it is worth the extra dollar to get the ah-boong.

The servers were great. I got my ice cream right away after I placed my order. Once more, I was the only one who bought something.

The taste test was my favorite part of the whole thing. It was cold and smooth soft serve. It was clear that the Ube taste was strong. The milk and Ube mix, on the other hand, didn’t taste like much at all. I could barely taste the Ube because the milk was so much stronger.

When I mixed the cookies-and-cream and milk tea, the milk tea tasted stronger, and the cookies-and-cream tasted barely there afterward.

You can add toppings to your soft serve after it’s been made. I chose the ice cream with biscoff bits on top. The topping didn’t add much taste because it was just on the outside. I picked the cookie over the strawberry when I had to choose between the two. I thought I would get a real macaron, but all I got was half of a macaron cookie. It was just right—soft and chewy.

The waffle, or ah-boong, was golden brown on the outside. The waffle was just right when I bit into it. It was light and fluffy like a pancake, and it wasn’t sweet. This is what I ordered with Nutella inside. Instead of filling the waffle cone, the Nutella was spread all over the inside of the waffle.

The soft serve was good, but I didn’t think it was worth the price. The tastes are pretty basic, maybe even too basic for $7. The soft serve and ah-boong were good, but the price and position of the shop took away from the whole experience.
