‘Longtime Cowley Sheriff deputy’s position is left after being arrested for DUI’

A deputy sheriff who had worked for the Cowley County Sheriff’s Office for 24 years quit last week after being arrested for DUI earlier this month.

John Vanroyen, who had been promoted to corporal officer, quit the sheriff’s office on November 13. A person from the county said Vanroyen had worked for the sheriff’s office since August 2000.

A report from the Winfield Police Department says that on November 8, Vanroyen, 48, of Burden, was in an accident in the 2200 block of E. Ninth that did not damage anyone. He hit a sign and a fence.

Vanroyen was arrested for driving while impaired. Online records from the jail show that he was booked in at 1:45 a.m. on the day of the crash. After about 45 minutes, he bonded out.

County records show that Vanroyen was making $66,998 a year when he left his job.

According to The Courier Traveler, Vanroyen quit, and there will be no internal probe.

A fatal officer-involved killing happened north of Winfield just two years ago and Vanroyen was shot and hurt. The county gave him and two other deputies awards for their work in that killing, which was later found to be legal.
