Kelly Lynn, a former Norman council member, was sentenced at Oklahoma County Courthouse after being found guilty of direct contempt.

Kelly Lynn was arrested and held in direct contempt at the Oklahoma County Courthouse Thursday for being rude. Lynn used to be a council member for Norman Ward 3 and a judge for the city of Wewoka.

Lynn was defending Mac Lee Brink in a child custody case before she was arrested. NonDoc reports that District Court Judge James Siderias told Lynn he should be taken for contempt of court while the case was going on.

The case was moved to District Judge Sheila Stinson’s courtroom, where she gave Lynn a five-day jail term for his behavior.

A deputy public defense for Oklahoma County named Ryan Sullivan told NonDoc that Lynn was swearing at a public defender named Katie Carter, who was asking to talk to the judge. He then told Lynn not to talk like that to lawyers.

Sullivan said Lynn “became hostile” after Siderias scolded her in court. Lynn was told that if he didn’t stop, he would be held in contempt. According to Sullivan, Lynn kept acting stupid and told the judge something like, “I’ve got something for you too.” Lynn was then led upstairs by cops.

Officer Aaron Brilbeck, who works as a public information officer for the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office, told OU Daily that Lynn was caught and will be sentenced on Friday. The police officer told OU Daily that Lynn had a gun on her when she was stopped.

According to Oklahoma law, municipal judges can carry a gun on state land, including a courthouse. This includes judges who are also lawyers.

Lynn was charged of beating up a woman in Norman in 2022 at Louie’s Grill and Bar. Lynn was charged with taking Sally Little by the hair and clothes, pulling her toward the door, and yelling, “Get the f— out!”

Little called the police, but Lynn wasn’t charged by Cleveland County District Attorney Greg Mashburn.

Lynn lost his race to keep his Ward 3 spot on the Norman City Council in 2023. Before the election, Lynn was sworn in as the local judge for Wewoka.

This caused the city to sue Lynn. A judge in Cleveland County said Lynn was breaking the law by having two jobs at the same time, so he had to give up his seat in Ward 3 and become a judge in Wewoka.

Lisa Standridge beat Lynn in the general election for the state Senate District 15 seat in November, after Lynn lost the primary election in June. Lynn got 16.7% of the vote in the primary election.

Lynn will be brought back to Stinson’s courtroom at 1:30 p.m. on Friday after he gets out of jail for a follow-up hearing.
