Due to the fact that it thrives in chilly, moist environments, listeria is distinct from the majority of other bacteria that are responsible for food poisoning. As low as 31 degrees Fahrenheit, it is even capable of growing.

Listeria can swiftly spread from surfaces that have been contaminated with the bacterium when food comes into contact with those surfaces, even if the area has been carefully cleansed.

There are a number of foods that contain listeria, including sausages, cold cuts, and hot dogs. Other foods that contain listeria include unpasteurized milk, soft cheeses, smoked salmon, and salads that contain ham, poultry, or seafood.

It is also capable of living in soil, which puts raw fruits and vegetables at risk of contamination.

Despite the fact that cooking can eliminate the germs, it is still possible for it to return if the item is infected once more after it has been cooked. It is best to dispose of your food if you have any reason to believe that it may be contaminated.

As a result of the increased likelihood of being ill, this is of utmost significance for individuals who are pregnant, elderly, or have a compromised immune system.

In situations where listeriosis extends beyond the stomach, the symptoms that a person experiences can change depending on whether or not they are pregnant.

People who are pregnant typically experience moderate symptoms that are comparable to those of the flu, such as fever, fatigue, and muscle pains.

On the other hand, listeriosis during pregnancy can result in potentially life-threatening complications, such as a miscarriage, a stillbirth, an early birth, or a potentially fatal infection in the newborn.

Other symptoms that may be experienced by individuals who are not pregnant include fever, aches and pains in the muscles, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and seizures.
