Heritage Auctions says that the 1876-CC 20 Cent has been called “a numismatic prize of the first order.” In this case, it would be a prize that every fan would want to own. With that in mind, you can see why someone would pay up to $870,000 for it.
In fact, it might be just as uncommon as the famous 1804 dollar. Or even the dime from 1894-S or the half dollar from 1838-O. Without a doubt, it is a beautiful gem.
When was the 20-cent coin authorized?
It looks like it was not allowed until 1875. The Act of March 3, 1875, made it possible for the U.S. Mint to make these coins. Henry Linderman, who is the director of the mint, gave this 20-cent coin his full backing.
It is interesting that at first people thought it would help stores and customers who were short on five-cent pieces. Customers were overcharged, so that was very helpful.
In other words, the goal was to fix a problem with the sales that were not either rare or new. However, these 20-cent pieces had a poor value.
Why was the 20-cent coin unpopular?
It was a strange amount of money, and it looked like it would fail as soon as the U.S. Mint made it. It might have been a different story if the Mint had stopped making the quarter when this one came out. That is why it caused misunderstanding.
When we look at the front of this 1876-CC 20-cent bill, we see Lady Liberty sitting on a rock. In this case, she is looking left. A liberty cap that is on a pole is also in her hand.
In her left hand, she is holding a symbol that says “Liberty.” You can see the 13 stars around the 20-cent coin.
They stand for the original countries. There is also the year, 1876. The eagle with the olive trees and arrows is shown on the back.
