California House seat is won by former San José mayor, dealing a blow to Newsom

Decision Desk HQ says that former San José Mayor Sam Liccardo will beat fellow Democrat Evan Low to win California’s 16th Congressional District.

Liccardo’s win is noteworthy because Low, who was a member of the state assembly, had the support of the state Democratic Party, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), and other well-known California Democrats.

Liccardo, on the other hand, had support from Robert Rivas (D), Speaker of the California Assembly, Reps. Robert Garcia (D) and Mike Levin (D), and other groups.

The district covers parts of Silicon Valley and is just south of San Francisco. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), a representative, said last year that she was leaving her job.
