The quick response by the San Mateo police led to the arrest of 40-year-old Steven Ramey and 36-year-old Gustavo Meza, the suspects within the vehicle containing not only stolen license plates but also illegal drugs and paraphernalia.

They didn’t surrender immediately, as they first attempted to escape by merging onto Highway 101 after officers attempted a traffic stop.

A closer inspection of the car revealed more stolen items that have yet to be returned to their owners. As the city grapples with a spike in license plate thefts, the police are urging the public to be vigilant in checking their vehicle’s plates and promptly reporting any discrepancies.
