Texarkana, AR – The Miller County Project Prevent Youth Coalition partnered with local groups Saturday to promote a cleanup day at Bobby Ferguson Park with a focus on cigarette butts. Arkansas High Student Madison Stanley with the Interact Club from the school and the Student Council assisted in the cleanup which was sponsored by several local groups including the Texarkana Arkansas City Beautiful Commission.
Teresa Davis oversees the Miller County Project Prevent Youth Coalition and set the event in motion. Other groups such as the Student Council and Interact Club from Arkansas High sponsored by Tonya Dunphy, and Nedra Turney with the City Beautiful Commission contributed volunteers and supplies. Several local businesses also sponsored the event such as Chicken Express, McAlisters, El Chico, On the Border, Ta Molly’s, Texas Roadhouse, Sonic, Walmart, Parrot Island in Ft. Smith and others.
The event provided a base camp, supplies and other items needed for the day. The focus was to pick up trash and gather cigarette butts in particular. Nedra Turney was happy with the turnout and stated that all the volunteers worked hard to ensure a successful cleanup day. The group hopes to take the cigarette butts to the Texarkana Arkansas City Board and request that consideration be given to making the Arkansas city side parks smoke free. Late Saturday afternoon dozens of pictures were being posted to social media celebrating the success of the event.
