Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday signed into law by President Ronald Reagan in 1983. It was first officially celebrated in 1986. The holiday is meant to coincide with Dr. King’s birthday and to recognize and commemorate his spirit and drive for equality for all people. Dr. King placed his life on the line several times in peaceful demonstrations where he was threatened, beat, jailed, and eventually killed while working toward equality and the promotion of a society which would treat all people equal. Dr. King was jailed twenty-nine times for his beliefs before being murdered in Memphis, Tennessee. Today all people benefit from his work through Civil Rights laws which guarantee equality for all in our nation.
